Christine Elwin’s A Tale
in Time is a humorous and poignant love story with an
enchanting protagonist determined to have her happy ending.
Twenty-five-year-old Lucy
Lincoln is facing a bleak future.
It’s December 6, 2008 in
Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Lucy has inherited her grandmother’s
huge, decaying Victorian house. Her beloved grandmother,
recently passed, leaves Lucy not only her “manor” but also in a
state of confusion, despair and isolation. The disrepair of the
old home matches Lucy’s own feelings and, as she sits on the
floor on that cold, December day, a small green frog appears.
With the walls peeling around
her, the heat off, and knowing that she must sell her home, the
frog is a small distraction. He hops toward her, smiles, and
then quickly turns, leaves, and slams the back door. Is Lucy
going insane?
If that’s not bad enough,
Alec Frogmore, the termite inspector shows up right after the
frog leaves and the two nearly come to blows. This scenario
introduces Lucy’s journey back in time as she attempts to bring
the house and her life into the present, yet yearns to visit its
inhabitants of the past.
Lucy miraculously spends a
day in the year 1870 and must cope with a host of problems. The
following years, 1888, 1925, and December 6, 1941, the day
before Pearl Harbor, complicate her life even further. In the
meantime, Alec Frogmore has the gall to keep reappearing as a
distant Frogmore relative on her trips back in time.
Lucy’s journey takes her on a
whirlwind of adventures where she learns the value of living in
the present and, in doing so, finds her happy ending. Love,
laughter and pain radiate through the pages of Elwin’s
delightful novel.
