Chess Masters
By William Westlake

Blending international political espionage, military coups, and characters that seem straight out of the pages of a real-life news story, Westlake creates an action-packed plot that works—brilliantly.

David Stokes is a MIT graduate student with a set of very special skills—he was once a Master Sergeant of the Army’s Special Forces division.  While researching a college project at the university, a commotion from upstairs leads him to investigate.

David discovers an old enemy—an adversary from his military career and he quickly contains the situation by neutralizing the enemy.  But how did this person find him and what does he want?

David learns that local millionaire and owner of a private security agency, Ray Clementine, has been contracted by the government to disrupt a potential international disaster.  The two players are the Russian and the Czechs which would put the U.S. security at its highest risk level.  Enlisting the help of fellow graduate student and assistant to Clementine, Anne Giordano, the two use their training to find out how recent events at the university may be linked to international threats.

Working under the auspice of Clementine’s security agency, David and Anne become partners in dismantling the risks.  As the two are drawn into a game of international conspiracies and dangerous operations, long buried secrets begin to surface.  People from a past that David would like to forget begin to appear.  Who can they trust?  As they get closer to the truth, they begin to realize that they are simply pawns in an international game of such magnitude that there is more at stake than they ever dreamed possible.
