Author Mohammad Mohabbat
chronicles his tumultuous yet inspiring life in Afghanistan and
the United States.
After escaping his less than
desirable treatment in Afghanistan, he becomes a part of the
U.S. where he experiences great love and acceptance until the
tragic event on September 11, 2001.
At the age of 16, Mohammad Gul
Mohabbat was the first Afghan foreign exchange student to the
United States. He became so acclimated to the lifestyle and
customs within the U.S. that upon his return to Afghanistan he
became an enthusiastic advocate for America and its way of life.
Not even a Soviet invasion and the Communist dogma spreading
across the land quenched his verbal support of the U.S..
Mohammad's refusal to be silenced soon caused him to be labeled
as an American spy.
By then Mohammad had
attended a university and was married with two small children,
but that didn't stop the Communists from taking him from his
home and dumping him into a prison where he was beaten
and tortured within an inch of his life. The Soviets hated his
moral resolve but allowed Mohammad to live so they could learn
from his supposed dealings with America. Mohammad saw this as a
new chance at life and hatched a plan that would eventually
allow him and his family to escape from Afghanistan to India
then finally on to the United States.
Over time Mohammad managed to
parlay his Afghan education in Electrical Engineering into a
successful career. With his thriving career, happy family and
the respect of his peers and community, Mohammad thought he
was truly living what is considered the American... until the
fateful morning of September 11, 2001. As the Twin Towers
crumbled, so did Mohammad's life. He would soon find out what it
feels like to go from being the object of affection to being the
object of pure hatred and disdain because of his Muslim
heritage.
Through a mixture of humor and
unsettling drama, Mohammad relates his most valued life
lesson... there is a very thin line between love and hate.
