This poignant remembrance of
World War II Europe was written by a woman who used her share of
One-Way Tickets.
Renée Levine was born in
Berlin in 1925 to German-Jewish professionals. She tells the
stories of three generations of her family. All left home, never
to return. Hitler’s Germany was a time of upheaval, when loss of
family and the transplanting of lives was commonplace.
Levine’s own one-way tickets
took her from Berlin to Munich to Breslau, the North Sea Coast,
London, Kent, Los Angeles and Boston, finally to arrive in
Paris. Her descriptions of each of her journeys are accompanied
by photographs taken along the way.
There were no return tickets
for three generations of her relatives, but Levine believes
their stories need to be told.
About the Author

At 84 years old, Renée Levine has a story to tell before it is
too late. She has been writing for 30 years. She wanted her
family to understand “the strange quilt of my life” and needed
to describe “my vanished world to my grandchildren.” Levine is a
retired therapist and college professor. She has been reading in
three languages for most of her life. Levine now lives with her
husband near Paris, France.
