Coleen
D’Andrea’s The Harbinger is the magical tale of a woman
who finds love in another time and place.
Peyton
Miller has a life that, by all appearances, is the envy of
many. She has everything a woman could want—a husband, a nice
home and a comfortable lifestyle. In reality, she is a
disillusioned society wife married to a man she no longer
loves. Her only comfort is her painting—she has a promising
career as an artist.
Often
taking solace through her painting, one day she is distracted by
a mysterious crow. Drawn to the bird, she follows him to an
abandoned cottage. Within its crumbled foundation, she finds a
strange box filled with Indian artifacts that whirl her into a
terrifying black void.
Peyton
awakens to find an elderly woman dressed in colonial garb
standing over her. The woman is adamant that Peyton is her
grandchild, Rachel. The woman begs Peyton to follow her and she
does so, terrified and disoriented, to an unfamiliar and
puritanical home.
Once
there, Peyton is forced to assume the life of Rachel Landry, a
woman married to a sea captain in Salem, Massachusetts.
Somehow, Peyton has been transported to the 17th
century, the year before the witch trials begin. As she
struggles to adapt to the primitive surroundings of the era, she
begins a fight to prevent the persecution of innocent women in a
village. The women, harboring a dark secret, have much to learn
from Peyton. Peyton has much to learn about herself and about
love—true, enduring love. She begins to understand why she’d
never been happy in the 21st century—the love of her
life belongs to a distant past.
Blending
modern-day, brilliant storytelling with New England lore, this
tender and perfectly constructed debut novel will capture your
heart and have you reading well into the night.
