The Miracle of Shoah
is a true story. It
begins with the Blitzkrieg of Poland in 1939, when 32 relatives
of Hayia Mitmacher, a Polish Jew, were captured and sent to
concentration camps.
Hayia is hidden by friends. Her name and identity are changed
before she is sold into servitude in Germany as a housemaid. Her
strong work ethic leads to her to a job in the household of the
admiral heading up the German Navy. It is also a coming of age
story, detailing 12-year-old Hayia’s relationship with the
admiral’s wife, as Hayia matures into an adult.
Today Hayia is over 80 years old and is grateful for surviving
the Shoah, defined as
the mass murder
of European Jews by Nazis during World War II.
In
this inspiring remembrance to those who lived and died in the
war, author Hank Silver brings to life the everyday struggles in
Berlin, at a time when fear and betrayal meant life or death.
The author was a six-year-old child when the United States
entered World War II. His uncle died in fighting on the European
front, leading Silver to a life-long interest in the war.
Silver
says it is Hayia’s story of survival and freedom that inspired
him to write the book. “I have known the woman this book is
about for 40 years or so and she revealed these details to me. I
thought it was a wonderful story, so I began to write about her
early life consumed by terror for the duration of the war.”
About the Author
Born in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, Hank Silver now lives in Dallas, Texas. He retired
from the business he owned in 2001. Now that his children are
grown, he and his wife, Annette, love to travel and have seen
most of the world and all 50 states.
