Two
Women Explore Their Troubled Pasts to Find Their Futures
Tracey Selanis Nowers’
moving debut novel, There’s More to Me Than You, explores
the not-so-perfect side of adoption.
Catherine is a beautiful, twenty-something
woman with a promising future, but constantly struggles with a
troubled past.
Adopted at a young age, Catherine can’t let
go of the feeling that she was unloved by her birth mother and
works through her pain and anger by seeking attention and
acceptance through destructive relationships. She decides that
in order to move forward, she must find the woman who gave her
up.
Sharon, Catherine’s mother, grew up in a
military family and was accustomed to being uprooted her entire
life. Regularly reinventing herself, she never quite came to
terms with who she was and thrived on seeking acceptance through
men who never cared to find out. One horrible day changed
everything when she was raped and became pregnant. Wanting to
erase the memory from her life, she gave Catherine up for
adoption.
When the two
women meet, they discover that blood ties can’t erase
indiscretions and painful memories. One will accept and
forgive, the other will choose a life filled with denial,
turmoil and regret.
Tracey
Selanis Nowers writes a powerful and compassionate story. With
heartbreaking astuteness and richly textured characters, she
unflinchingly looks at family ties—the kind that can liberate or
destroy—with unerring perception.
