Walking with the Vain
Cattle is based on contradictions and oppositions,
and these two qualities permeate the
text in many respects.
It is
Sui Generis: spirited, full of
anguish and genuine. Its authenticity lies in its driven-ness,
particularly the distress and agony that speak from
it.
The tone of a “spiritual drama” reflects its concerns. It is
visionary, confessional, triumphant, and obsessed with
introspection, ultimately cosmic in its aspirations.
Walking with the Vain Cattle is a journey that takes the
traveler from states of extreme dejection to moments of ecstatic
bliss. And while ever and again it seems as if the journey
itself were the goal, it appears equally obvious that many times
the ultimate goal is nothing less than the mystical union with
the absolute.
