I sang "All Things Bright and Beautiful" as a five year old in shorts in a girls school (Salcombe School SouthgateLondon N14) and was confused why it wasn't considered "Jewish". I therefore dedicate the following poem in my book to Salcombe. Please note that it may be sang to the same tune as All Things Bright and Beautiful!
Day of Rest
I remembered the Sabbath as a Holy Day
Set out as if the best;
For I had forgotten, to my dismay,
The truest meaning of rest.
There were six long days of punishment
Working hours long and obscene;
Approached the dark, then came the light
Of the glorious Sabbath Queen.
Former rain upon the conservatory,
Latter rain, and morning dew,
On the seventh day peace and harmony
That surrounded me and you.
Sunlight on the windows
Of meeting places all,
And hope is in their voices
And light is in their call.
"We’re not just one and ownlies.
There’s something stronger than all of us.
We must fight greed; we must fight hate
And racism and lust."
And it’s good night to you, baby,
Another week to be seen
Before I can meet my lady again,
The beauteous Sabbath Queen.
